What is Exercise Physiology?

We all know that exercise is good for us, but many of us still don't do as much as we need!

Did you know? Exercise & physical activity is one of the most powerful medicines out there!

The stats below show that our lives continue to be sedentary, even though we can all access this amazing treatment for free! We think moving our bodies is going to be hard, but really, the secret is finding an activity you love to do, and doing it often!

45%

45% of Australian adults did the recommended fitness activity in 2017-18.

17%

Only 17% of Australian adults did the recommended strength & fitness activity in 2017–18.

30%

Only 30% of pregnant Australian women met the fitness activity recommendations in 2017-18.

Fortunately, the broad term 'exercise' can include structured activity like gyms, exercise classes or team sports, and also unstructured lifestyle activities such as ballroom dancing, bushwalking or gardening.

BEING PHYSICALLY ACTIVE CAN:

  • Help people control their weight and blood sugar
  • Increase fitness and muscular strength
  • Lower blood pressure and increase circulation
  • Stimulate bone growth
  • Improve mobility and freedom of movement
  • Dramatically increase happiness and overall quality of life

There are countless health conditions that can be positively impacted through exercise; a short list could include: heart disease, depression, cancer, obesity, arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, PCOS, sleep apnoea, and so much more! Exercise can control blood sugar regardless of insulin resistance, and can even make your body more sensitive to insulin! Exercise has also been shown to be as effective as antidepressants in those with mild to moderate depression!

Exercise physiologists (EPs) prescribe exercise to treat acute injuries, and manage chronic health conditions. University qualified, EPs have a broad knowledge of the human body and the many benefits exercise has, both physically and mentally.

Exercise physiologists offer a range of services including physical rehabilitation, health education, behavioural coaching, and assessments of physical capacity (fitness, strength etc). A typical session may include: the prescription of a tailored exercise program, setting goals and building habits, promoting increased lifestyle activity, and discussing the best way to reduce sedentary behaviours.

They differ from physiotherapists - where physios tend to be hands on for assessments and treatments, exercise physiologists are typically hands off and focus on how and why the client moves. EPs also don't provide invasive services, diagnosis, joint manipulation or medication. In Australia, accredited exercise physiologists are affiliated with Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA).

CASE STUDIES:

Diabetes weighing on your mind & body?

1.2 million Australians have diabetes, and up to 500,000 more are currently undiagnosed.

It's the world's fastest growing chronic condition. It can have a significant impact on your quality of life, lead to serious complications & reduce life expectancy.

The benefits of exercise can't be overstated, especially with diabetes! Exercise lowers blood glucose levels and boosts your body's sensitivity to insulin. Essentially, exercise helps your body where is struggles.

Even a small weight loss can make a big difference. The key is have a plan, get started, and stay active!

Sore Back limiting your freedom in life?

Almost 40% of Australians have back pain that 'moderately interfered' with their daily activities.

In other words - it's frustrating and hurts doing the shopping, playing with your kids, or even sitting for too long. Basically, it's a pain just living life!

It doesn't need to be like this! Starting with simple stretches and targeted strength exercises, you can support your back and get more comfortable, week by week. It really is possible, and you CAN do it!

Just ask yourself, does back pain limit you at all? And what are you willing to do to change this?

WHAT DO CLIENTS SAY?

This is the first time I’ve been given a clear overview.

" Thank you for the explanation about resetting my posture. I’ve been told frequently that my posture needs correcting to address my pain issues, and despite a lot of stretch and strengthening programs, this is the first time I’ve been given a clear overview that I can practice each day"

Sharon Parfait

"

I felt a marked difference within the first session!

" Before seeing Michael I had pain in my shoulders and neck constantly. I felt a marked difference within the first session, and after a week I was feeling 100% better! Michael really listens to you to what your problems are and gives you exercises to relieve the pain or stiffness, and adjusts your exercise regime if you find any of the exercises are too difficult. Just amazing!"
